Hidradenitis Suppurativa - Thoughts and Theories
by Jason Cameron
Old Theories

My first inclination was that Candida albicans, the yeast/fungus reportedly responsible for vaginal yeast infections and a condition known as Thrush (most often observed in infants) was entirely responsible for HS and all related symptoms and diseases. My initial theory was most likely wrong in many respects, but there may be some truth to it and I haven't abandoned it completely. Please keep in mind that this is a theory I pieced together from information I found on the internet. At the time I was forming this theory, I was not noting my sources and some information may have come from commercial sites selling products. I do not endorse the use of any specific brands or products.

Theory 1

My second theory explores another yeast/fungus called Pityrosporum ovale and the possibility that an allergy to this or similar pathogens plays a role in the development of HS and related symptoms and diseases. While inconclusive, there are interesting ideas presented here and this theory, along with statements made in HS forums prompted me to look into autoimmune disorders, which is the foundation of theory 3.

Theory 2

At this time, Theory 3 is my “latest theory”, but I'm sure that will end-up here soon enough.
